FISHING
The Maldives is indisputably a paradise for the avid sport fisher. In the waters of this magical environment numerous recognized sport fish exist, making it an unforgettable venue for adventure and nature enthusiasts alike.
Morning fishing is one of the most commonly experienced modes of enjoying sport fishing in Maldivian waters. When the first rays of the tropical sunrise touch the sapphire waters of the Indian Ocean, the local dhoni vessels set sail with the fishing aficionados on board.
Visitors will enjoy the breathtaking marine vistas as they set off in the early hours of the morning. The Maldivian waters teem with fish and visitors can hope to catch prize specimens such as barracuda, wahoo, rainbow fish, sailfish, swordfish, marlin and yellowfin tuna.
Other attractive options are available for the committed fisher. In the evening hours visitors can bask in the picturesque sunset as they try their hand at snaring snappers, emperors, jacks, squirrelfish and other reef denizens. Visitors may also attempt the authentic Maldivian style hand reel seabed fishing.
FISHERMAN’S ISLAND
The picture perfect spotless beaches and luxurious facilities of the Maldives resorts without a doubt provide a great location to spend your vacation time. But for the visitor who desires to obtain an authentic insight into the lifestyle of the local Maldivian villagers a visit to a fishermen’s island will prove delightful.
Organized tours will take the traveller to one of the typical serene Maldivian fishing villages.
The bounties of the seas have traditionally been the source of the Maldivians’ livelihood, and even today fishing is the occupation of a large proportion of the local population. The close-knit fishing communities present a unique way of life seen nowhere else in the world.
The visitor may take the opportunity to stroll through the lanes of the village, observing children playing.
ISLAND HOPPING
Since the Maldive Islands consist of no less than 1,192 lovely small islands, many visitors choose to spend some of their time island hopping – exploring the many different islets which make up this premier tourist destination. The diverse beaches, sensational landscapes, serene waters and thriving vegetation of the different islands mean that no traveller will be less than delighted by the visual riches on offer. The visitor may choose to explore other resorts, pristine uninhabited islands or those islets occupied by the local villagers.
Often an island hopping expedition will take the form of a full day excursion to a secluded island, where participants can swim, snorkel, indulge in fun beach games or simply soak up the sunshine under the clearest of blue skies. Typically a delectable barbeque lunch will be provided at the island.
Couples on their honeymoon often choose to embark on a romantic tour of the secluded islands.
MAALE CITY TOUR
Malé, the capital of the Maldive Islands is a thriving city of about 100,000 people. This charming city boasts a number of recognized landmarks which should be on the itinerary of every visitor to the islands.
One of Malé’s prime attractions is Sultan Park and the National Museum it contains. Sultan Park is a tranquil garden within the bustling city, an oasis of greenery with leafy trees and ponds covered with water lilies. The National Museum features a comprehensive selection of items that belonged to Maldivian royalty; also on display are a variety of intriguing archaeological findings.
The Mulee Aage Palace dating to the early 18th century is another key attraction, an elegant colonial building built by a Maldivian Sultan. The palace is noted for its ornate white carvings. Adjacent to this edifice the visitor will see the Grand Friday Mosque, a magnificent architectural triumph featuring lovely coral engravings, an imposing gold dome and impressive minarets; inside you will find the tombs of members of royalty and national heroes.
The visitor will be thrilled by the attractive artificial beach in Malé. Not to be missed are the multitude of shopping options available in the city; a good starting point would be the Local Market, a relatively peaceful neighbourhood where you can find local fruits, vegetables, yams, nuts and sweetmeats. On the other hand the Majeedhee Magu is filled with stalls vending handbags, garments, electronics and cosmetics. Meanwhile the Chaandanee Magu is renowned for imported products and souvenirs.
Not to be missed is the Malé Fish Market, where the visitor will find a myriad of sea creatures and the opportunity to obtain an insight into the traditional Maldivian lifestyle.
